Nijmegen Lent, Dr Huygenhof, Frans Huijgen and A-Z
We decided in 2005 to take the gamble and move to a bigger home on a bigger plot, closer to the city center in the Nijmegen ' Jump Across the Waal' river (Waal Sprong). The plans for this new town can be found on the official Waal Sprong site (Dutch. Details on new schools, new shopping centers, busroutes, sports centres and public transport are listed here. A service centre (medical centre, shopping, primary school) is planned for on the Vrouwe Udasingel (Lent East). Huygenhof borders on the Turenesingel, part of the circular road around Nijmegen north. New address: Dr Huygenhof 11, 6663 DV Lent (after 1 April 2005)

The house in Huijgenhof has its own mini drive, two connected gardens facing SE and SW, central city heating, mini balcony, veranda and office space (for Anja's thriving Nutrition and Reflexology practice).

Despite disputes with GEM Nijmegen and contracters, developer AM Wonen and residents from Petuniastraat started early May. Building started officially 14 May 2004 with placing the final beams on our house by Nijmegen City Councillor Paul Depla. He too expressed the hope that the final building would finish March 2005.

HOW TO GET THERE?

A start of social life and co-operation had already in 2004 to form a buyers' society (KOPERSVERENIGING HET BINNENHOF) for Dr Huygenhof in order to streamline communication, ideas and harmony amongst the residents.
This is based on suggestions from previous new home owners in the region and it uses the regulations suggested by Eigen Huis (a Dutch home owners society with 640,000 members). For details, see their site.
Who is was Dr Huygen?
 Prof Dr Frans Huygen lived in Lent as a General Practitioner from 1943-1982.He had a large practise with no fewer than 5,000 patients in Lent, Slijk-Ewijk and Oosterhout. He did everything, from childbirtyh, first aid to operations. He obtained his PhD in 1948 on the health of small children in families. Families were large and he was a one of the few GPs who recorded illnesses as well as events in family files to chart the social and environmental conditions. He felt these had a large effect on health, and therefore he soon had monthly meetings with religious and social workers to discuss the well-being of his Lent people.
He was an extraordinary figure, and his influence on the field of General Practitioners was large. He was the founding father of modern 'gezinsgeneeskunde' Family Practice and research on family health.
In 1956 he set up with a number of fellow visionaries the Dutch ' Nederlands Huisartsen Genootschap'. He chaired this society of General Practitioners for 8 years, and died a widower in 1989. His secretary and support Emmy is still alive to date. His GP practice was taken over by Gezondheidscentrum Huygen with Dr vd Bosch.

During his work at St Radboud Academic hospital in Nijmegen he conceived of writing the standard book in General Practition, called Family Medicine (1978). This book serves as a world-wide standard, in which the findings of course of illnesses and behaviour are recorded on a number of Lent families.

He had many hobbies, a wide interest and was an inspiration to many working with him, both in Medicine as in sculpting and painting. At an early age he could not chose between a career as an artist or as a doctor. His sketches come from Ireland, Provence (FR) and Lent. He died in 1989.

The Frans Huygen Stichting looks after his material and intellectual inheritance. They look after the many sculptures, paintings and sketches by Huygen. An exhibition was held in Dorppschuur in Lent from 16-17 and 23-24 October 2004 (1100-1700).

Many people in Lent, including Dr Huygen, were against the Nijmegen plans to annex Lent. They felt that the massive housing plans would alter the nature of the peaceful village.
Official information by the Nijmegen builders is listed www.waalsprong-nijmegen.nl > Lent > Dr Huijgenhof is the site with barely enough info on existing and realistic plans. You cannot see the nearby ponds, parks, nor can you see what the new position of the dike will be. The Nijmegen council believes that moving the river dike inland will create a wider river and less chance of a flood in Nijmegen and Lent. Currently, two projects are studied for their effect on the environment, and pending the outcome a decision will be taken. Objections can be raised using this standard letter
Current 2005 plans mean destroying some old houses, carving up the village even more, and wrecking the ancient archeological artefacts in Lent where since prehistoric times people used to cross the river, such as some Iron Age graves (6000 bc), remnants of the Roman-Bataaf farms (10-200 AD) and some modern (medieval houses).

  • Also check out Mystery man of Lent on the unusual find of 4 skeletons found in Laauwik st. One was placed belly down, a disrespectful pose, a hand trying to protect his neck. Thre bronze gems were found, indicating this man had a high rank though. This person lay on top of another, as if the two had been planned to be buried this way. The 4 were buried, whereas at the time it was customary to burn the corpes and bury the urns. Around 500 BC French Celts lived in the area, and they had the custom to bury their dead.
