NIJMEGEN

This year, Nijmegen celebrates its foundation 2000 years ago by the Romans. Evidence of prehistoric settlement abound, but the start of a true city only started in 5 AD. The historic society of Nijmegen has issued a 3 volume book on the history of Nijmegen, currently retailing at 85 euro.
The old Roman city of Nijmegen with its 150,000 inhabitants is a typical student town. In the middle ages, the town was one of Charlemagne's capitals (the other one being Aachen in Germany. This background is still visible today, making Nijmegen a very attractive city for foreign nationals.
The Radboud University of Nijmegen has about 10,000 students. It even offers a lecture service with extracts and summaries of lectures in the Netherlands!
In addition to academic activities you will find lots of opportunities to be cultural or sportsminded in any of the libraries, museums, cinema's, shops, restaurants and bars, and not to mention the green and hilly countryside with plenty of water and space for cycling, the 4-day walk-a-thon, rowing, swimming, hanggliding, indoor icehockey, and even skating and skiing in winter. Ancient villages as well as national parks skirt the city so that you do not have to waste any weekend indoors.


Near Nijmegen you will find Arnhem, with its zoos, the national heritage museum, the National Park De Veluwe (woods and moors) and the many picturesque villages in the lush river deltas of the Rhine, Maas and Waal. Arnhem also has a student population due to its polytechnique and vocational colleges (e.g. , the HAN Arnhem and Nijmegen University.
